About Academics Without Borders USA

Who We Are

Our Story

Academics Without Borders USA is a nonprofit founded in 2014, built on a simple conviction: lasting change in higher education is led by the institutions themselves. We pair skilled volunteer academics with colleges and universities in developing countries.

Each project answers a need the institution defines for itself, from launching new programs to strengthening existing ones. Our experts give their time and we help fund their travel, with each host contributing to its own project, so support reaches the work directly and builds capacity that endures.

  • Our Mission

To assist colleges and universities in developing countries as they increase their capacity to produce engineers, doctors, nurses, teachers, and other professionals their communities need.

  • How We Work

Every project begins with a need the host institution identifies for itself. Volunteer academics work alongside local faculty, building capacity that lasts well beyond a single visit.

  • Our Reach

Since 2014, our volunteers have supported host institutions across Asia, Africa, and Latin America. We expect each host to contribute to its own project, in kind or by sponsoring particular expenses.
